Re: Arkanoid Cabaret Build
Any progress is good progress . Keep in mind you Have to prime drywall mud to harden it . If you sand it and just cover it with the vinyl it could chip out easily .

Yeah I have some oil based primer ready to coat once finished. I am taking all the precautions I can to make this perfect. Thanks!

Re: Arkanoid Cabaret Build
I finished prepping the sides and insides with drywall mud and sanded down finely.
I coated the sides with 2 coats of white oil based primer. Oil based is important as particle board is very absorbant so water based paints would not work too well.
after each coat I sanded with 220 grit then 600 grit.
the result was a pretty nice smooth surface ready for vinyl to get applied on.
After coating both sides and being happy with the finish. I masked them off and focused on the front and inside.
I decided to rattlecan spray the front and inside, rolling would be too difficult in the inside portion. The primer I bought is a "Filler Primer". It says it fills irregularities and holes while it primes, I thought that was pretty neat. I was scared to start spraying as I didn't know if it would give a good finish with the particle board but you only live once i guess.
This was after the first coat. It looked and felt rough and that terrified me LOL. I sanded with 220 afterward and it really smoothed everything out. Thank God.
This is now the second (and final) coat of primer. It is rough as expected but I will sand it tomorrow and begin painting it black. I am aiming to get the woodgrain applied and have this 95% complete and in my room by this week if possible. Wish me luck!

Re: Arkanoid Cabaret Build
The day has finally come. Lots happened today.
I finished painting the front and inside with spraypaint. I'm pleased with the way it came out.
(the white near the coin door cutout is just glare)
So I brought the cab inside to its final resting place because I'm done all the dirty work. The most nervewracking part is coming up.
The sides are primed white and ready to have vinyl applied.
Next step was to lay it down flat on the ground and to cut my roll of vinyl to size. Then I put masking tape on the edges to secure it down and made sure it was straight. I peeled the bottom of the vinyl off and cut the backing of it and stuck about a 7 inch strip down to the cab to hold it down, then I started removing the rest of the backing while slowly smoothing out the vinyl and removing bubbles. The process is a bit hard to explain but I basically took it from John from Johns Arcade. Heres a vid of him doing it.

This is a pic after the side was stuck down
Immediately after that I cut the overhang of the vinyl flush with the cab and installed my molding.
Repeat the same to the other side and we have a finished cabinet!!
Next I just need to buy some plexi for the bezel and the CP and get some artwork printed and we're done!! so close!!

That looks amazing! Great job! Where did you pick up the wood grain vinyl decal?
What did you use or where did you buy whatever you need to do the t-moulding? And where did you get the t-moulding? I built a cocktail table but just painted my edges. Mouldings would finish it off nicely.

thanks freezie and njarmusk!
The Tmolding and slot cutting router bit was from Tmolding.com. They have everything you need to cut and install tmolding on that website. I painted the edges on one of my cabs too but nothing matches the look of tmolding, its worth it in my opinion!

Re: Arkanoid Cabaret Build
I've seen the stuff on tmolding.com. Wasn't sure if that was the only place to get it. Probably worth making the purchase.
Thanks eric
